Myomectomy
Myomectomy is a surgical procedure used to remove uterine fibroids. Your doctor may advise you to have this procedure if your fibroids are causing symptoms such as:
- Pelvic ache
- Prolonged durations
- Erratic bleeding and frequent urination
Myomectomy can be performed in one of three ways:
- Your surgeon can remove your fibroids through an open surgical cut in your lower belly with an abdominal myomectomy.
- Your surgeon can remove your fibroids using laparoscopic myomectomy through a series of tiny incisions. This may be done automatically. It is less invasive and has a faster recovery time than abdominal myomectomy.
- Your surgeon will use a special scope to remove your fibroids through your vagina and cervix during a hysteroscopic myomectomy.
Myomectomy is a possibility for women who have fibroids and want to get pregnant in the future or keep their uterus for another reason.
In contrast to a hysterectomy, which removes your complete uterus, a myomectomy eliminates your fibroids while leaving your uterus in place. This enables you to have children in the future.
The type of myomectomy recommended by your doctor is determined by the size and location of your fibroids:
- If you have several or very big fibroids growing in your uterine wall, an abdominal myomectomy may be the best option for you.
- If you have smaller and fewer fibroids, laparoscopic myomectomy may be preferable.
- If you have tiny fibroids inside your uterus, a hysteroscopic myomectomy may be preferable.
